It might be a baby horned rattlesnake (AKA side winder). So tiny and cute.

Story time! This was related to me by an older gentleman who was a friend of my mom’s while we were fishing. Rich didn’t say how old he was, but I’m guessing he was about 10 when this happened. That means this all occurred in the late ‘40s or early ‘50s.
When Rich was young, he and his little brother went fishing at one of the local ponds which was a short walk from his house . While they weren’t catching anything, there was another young kid (maybe 6?) nearby who was catching fish as fast as he could get the line back in the water. Rich and his brother did what any normal fishermen would do and wandered over to ask the kid what he was using as bait. “Worms!” was the reply. They asked him where he got the worms and he told them he dug them up from a nearby leaf pile. He also told them to be careful, the worms bite hard.
That set off the alarm bells in their heads and they asked to see the worms he caught. The kid had a coffee can full of baby snakes.
Rich ran to get help. The kid’s hands were already swelling up when he left.
He didn’t know if the kid lived or not, but I’m guessing the chances weren’t good. While they did have antivenin back then, it wasn’t in common use until the early ‘50s.
My take-home message? When you teach someone how to fish, be sure to teach them about bait.
